The Virginia Tech Professional MBA allows you an opportunity to earn your MBA from a highly-ranked program with minimal travel – and most importantly, without interrupting your career!

Our Students

Our students are full-time professionals with at least three years of post-undergraduate work experience looking to advance their career with an MBA. Some have a business background; many do not. Many are looking to stay in their current industry; some are looking to switch careers altogether.

Our Classes

Classes are held one Friday/Saturday a month, which provides the vital in-person classroom experience without an overwhelming classroom time commitment. Classes are held on Fridays from 9am-5:15pm and on Saturdays from 8am-4:30pm. Classes rotate between the Virginia Tech Richmond Center and the Roanoke Higher Education Center. Classes are held in each location 12 times during the 24 month PMBA program (every other month the locations alternate). While this may mean you are required to travel to class, many of our student like the ability to network outside of their local area and meet students from all parts of Virginia and neighboring states.

Admissions

The Virginia Tech Professional MBA program looks for individuals who exemplify professionalism, maturity, and diversity both personally and professionally. We intentionally limit our cohorts to no more than 40 students, which means we take special care to admit candidates who will enhance the classroom environment. Each student contributes to the overall class composite with their professional backgrounds, life experiences, and personalities. Such applicants are involved, capable of leading diverse teams, hands-on participants, and willing to work hard during their MBA studies.

Academics

The foundation of the 24-month Virginia Tech PMBA program is a 48-credit curriculum designed to provide basic business skills with an international perspective. The Virginia Tech PMBA courses focus on ethical and entrepreneurial leadership and strategic management of information technology in a global environment. As a PMBA student you will have a combination of face-to-face classes and course content delivered using distance learning technologies. The academic schedule is divided into eight terms of three months each.

The PMBA curriculum pushes you beyond simply learning new material. Unlike an undergraduate style of learning, the PMBA curriculum demands that you understand material prior to attending class.  Once in class, your professor will guide you through the practical application of the subject matter, through case study, group work and presentations, class discussions, and guest lecturers.

In 2011 with considerable student input, the MBA Advisory Committee established the Student-Faculty Handbook, which outlines the student and faculty standards and expectations of the Virginia Tech PMBA program.

Class Structure - hybrid

Classes meet in-person once a month (full day Friday and Saturday). The classes cover 60 percent of the content of a class. The remaining 40 percent is delivered via various electronic approaches depending on professor preference. The choice is left up to the individual instructor in each course to decide what approach fits best for that particular course. Examples include online discussion forums, simulations, group collaboration, Skype presentations, and one-way delivery of presentations.
