What you will learn

This MSc course is part of our development management programme and is intended for professionals in project management and those who have responsibility for development initiatives in government, non-governmental organisations, international and inter-governmental agencies and public and private enterprises.

It would also be suitable for people who intend to work in those areas, or who have an interest in public action for development, and for those who want to expand their conceptual and practical skills by taking an international perspective on management.

Time required and cost

To achieve the MSc in Development Management you must successfully gain 180 credits. These credits are made up from of the Postgraduate Diploma in Development Management and an additional 60 credits of study.

We recommend that you take no more than 30 credits, particularly in your first year. There is no time limit for completing the courses in the development management programme, though we cannot guarantee that the same selection of modules will continue to be available.

For details on module costs please see the tables at the bottom of this page. The total cost of the course depends on the modules studied. As a guide the total fee for 2012/13 academic year was from £9,645 to £14,085.

Career impact

The MSc consolidates and extends the learning built up through the postgraduate diploma. The final project module provides an opportunity to apply academic discipline to a development management problem, acquire research skills to deepen understanding of that problem and use learning from earlier modules to make a case for change in policy and/or practice. Typically, the problem you investigate is linked to your professional practice.

Entry requirements

To obtain this MSc you first need to gain the Postgraduate Diploma in Development Management and must also hold a bachelors degree from a UK university, or other recognised degree-awarding body, or a course at equivalent level.

You will also need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.

Classification of course

On successful completion of the required modules you can be awarded an MSc in Development Management entitling you to use the letters MSc (Dev Mgmt) (Open) after your name.
