Beyond developing your core skills, you’ll have countless opportunities at the School of Business to expand your horizons and explore new directions and industries. The Full-Time MBA program grants students a two-year license to explore, so your primary job for these two years is to think big, expose yourself to new ideas and shake yourself out of your comfort zone.

As a Full-Time MBA student, you’ll be part of a culture that pays more than lip service to entrepreneurship, innovation and technology commercialization. The University of Utah passed MIT to rank #1 in the nation for creating start-up businesses (22 new companies were launched from campus last year alone).

Opportunities abound for MBA students to take their education beyond the classroom. Murri, for example, worked with engineering students at the University of Utah’s Pierre Lassonde New Venture Development Center to develop a commercialization plan and financial strategy for a pioneering medical device.

Bachelor’s Degree - Full-Time MBA applicants must have completed the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. An academic or employment background specifically in business is not required to apply for the Full-Time MBA.

Minimum GPA - Applicants must have earned their degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Consideration will be given for applicants meeting this 3.0 GPA over the last 60 hours taken in their undergraduate course work.  

Standardized Test Score Requirement (GMAT / GRE) - All Full-Time MBA applicants are required to take the GMAT or GRE standardized tests. Scores are used to indicate aptitude for business studies and are valid for five years. If an applicant has taken the GMAT or GRE more than once, the highest score will be considered. There is no penalty for taking it more than once.

English Language Proficiency Requirement - International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency and the ability to contribute to classroom discussions and interact in a team environment.

International and permanent resident applicants who do not hold a bachelor's or graduate degree from a U.S. or English-speaking institution in accepted countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the United Kingdom) are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

TOEFL scores are valid for two years. Applicants who score below 100 on the Internet-based test or 600 on the paper-based test should retake the test before submitting an application.  Our program also accepts the IELTS exam with a minimum score of 7.0.

Applicants must use institution code 7922 for the David Eccles School of Business.

Work Experience – Strong candidates will have at least two years of professional work experience at the time of application.  Leadership skills demonstrated by significant volunteer or community service may be considered in satisfying this condition.

More about Professional Work Experience  

The quality of an MBA program is significantly enhanced by the real-world business experience that students bring to the classroom. For this reason, strong candidates will bring at least 2 years of professional work experience to the program. In addition to evaluating work experience in terms of years, we review the depth and breadth of an individual's position, his or her contributions to the work environment, and level of responsibility and progression. Work experience does not necessarily need to be business-based and can include areas such as military, teaching, Peace Corps or other similar areas.

When considering if your work experience meets our program expectations, we encourage you to consider the following general criteria for evaluation:

  • Can you show progression in responsibility or position?
  • Does the position normally require a bachelor's degree for hiring consideration?
  • Does your experience include managerial and/or supervisory responsibilities, leading a team to achieve established goals? Were you involved in setting these goals?
  • Does your experience involve project management with multiple steps/phases to be carried out over a finite period of time?
  • Does the position require expertise in business functions such as sales, accounting, human resources, finance, marketing, operations, etc., and/or technical functions such as engineering, computer programming, or sciences?
  • Was the majority of your work experience in a full-time format?

Early Career Admissions

Each year we welcome select early career candidates with less than 2 years professional work experience. Candidates applying under this status should be prepared to show strong leadership and managerial potential from other areas of their background such as involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service.

Two Letters of Recommendations 

We require two letters of recommendation and prefer that both come from professional relationships.  At least one should come from a previous or current employer, either from full-time employment or an internship.  The title or status of those you select is not necessarily important. What does matter is how closely your letter writers have worked with you and whether they can attest to your ability to add value to the workplace or professional team environment. 

Qualitative information about your professional and leadership abilities are an important part of your MBA application. The best letters of recommendation will provide insight and actual examples of your potential to succeed in a competitive and challenging environment of a full-time MBA.

Other points to consider: 

  • Choose someone who knows you well. It's a definite red flag when a recommender indicates "fairly well" or "not well" by the question about how well they know you.
  • Your recommenders must submit their letters of reference via the online application.
  • You are responsible for ensuring that both recommendations are submitted before the application deadline.
  • References of a personal or social nature are strongly discouraged.

Essays

There are two required essays and one optional essay in the application for the Full Time MBA program. If you are applying to an MBA dual-degree program, please note there is an additional required essay.

Essay #1 – 750 word maximum

Statement of Purpose – Use this essay to describe why you are choosing to pursue an MBA degree at this time in your career. Include information about what you hope to achieve while in the program, as well as your goals for after the program.

Essay #2 – 500 word maximum

Listed below are the four guiding principles (you’ll hear us call them the “four pillars”) of our MBA program. These ideals speak to our program values and what we hope for and expect from our students.

Choose one of the four MBA program pillars listed below that resonates with either your past experiences or your future goals.  In 500 words or less, tell us why you chose this particular pillar and how it has significance to you.

Essay #3 - optional 250 word maximum

The optional essay is truly optional, and may be presented in 250 words or less. It should be used to address any weaknesses (low GMAT or GPA) or inconsistencies in your application.  You may use it to explain your choice of recommenders, or if you believe there is other information that our admissions committee should know about your applications that hasn’t been previously addressed.

Tips for writing your essay:

  1. Keep answers in a business context and framework.
  2. Focus your energy on painting a concise, complete, and well-thought-out picture of who you truly are, rather than present what you think the Admissions Committee is looking for in response to essay questions.

What advantages do you believe an MBA/JD dual degree will provide for you post-graduation?

Transcripts 

The online application will ask you to list in chronological order all colleges and universities attended, including the University of Utah, regardless of length of attendance. Include each college you have taken courses from, including concurrent enrollment, study abroad, correspondence courses, etc.

You will then be asked to upload an unofficial transcript for each institution of higher education you have listed, regardless of length of attendance. This includes the University of Utah. These unofficial transcripts must be submitted separately, meaning notation of accepted transfer credit does not replace the need for an unofficial transcript from the university where credits were transferred from. Your application will not be considered complete until all unofficial transcripts have been received, so please attach unofficial transcripts for each institution of higher education you have attended before submitting your application.

When you are ready to submit your application, you will be directed through a payment process. The application fee may be paid via credit card or check. Please note that if you choose to pay by check, your application will not be reviewed until the payment is received.
